While I was visiting Rob and Kelly for a bit this
afternoon, we took a trip over to see Bob
Donahue. Last I knew the former Claremont
Speedway Modified driver turned NEAR/STAR
vintage Mod driver/builder had an empty shop.
Boy was I was wrong. Bob had an immaculately
prepared 1970's Chassis Dynamics mod on a lift.
If you know Bob, you know how nice and clean
this thing was. Perfect paint, beautiful fabrication
and finish, this car will look great at the races this
summer. "I hope this one doesn't sell, cause I want
to keep it", Bob said as he leaned against the car.
Apparently he took his last two to Thompson and
sold them both, which was somewhat suprising to
him, but not to anyone looking for a used modified
in "showroom" condition. This new car came from
Lyndonville, VT. "way up there" was the way it
was described to me. "I think its a 1979 C-D
car...2x4 rails, so its not super light". The car was
originally raced in New York, as far as he knew.
As I remeber, the roof is 1936 Ford. (but feel free
to correct me)
Donahue is a friend of so many local racers, as
he helps MANY teams with painting cars and
chassis. He helps Beth Adams and Rob Williams,
and also helps John Meany as well. Bob is old
school...just return the favor and show some
appreciation and everyone is happy, right?
I do know that our 2001 Distance pro stock
didnt look as nice as this car, and this one was
welded up when I was 7 years old. Also in the
shop were a beautiful hot rod and a Studebaker
pickup with some Fat tires. I loved the truck.
So the next time you see purple on a race car
at Monadnock or see a black and purple number
99 Modified, say hello to one of the good guys
around here, Bob Donahue.
