Well Mother Nature stopped some of the racing here in Southern New England but the sun was out in force on
Saturday. The True Value Mods were in town for their makeup race at the Cement Palace. It was the Street Stocks
that started off the features for the night with John Lallier leading the charge to the green. His lead lasted only 3
circuits before mechanical troubles forced him pitside for the night. Brain Spillane inherited the lead from there and
held off the charges of Tony Oliveira to take down his first career Street Stock win. Oliveira crossed the line second
but would later be DQ’ed in tech giving second place to Mike Lema. Steve Axon, Wayne Silvia and Mike Mitchell
would round out the top 5.
The True Value Mods were up next and it was a whale of a show. Louie Mechalides took the lead early in the race
and held back the various charges of Les Hinckley and Rich Savary to take down the win. It was a fairly clean race,
as only 8 cautions slowed the field all for minor spins. Savary got by Hinckley in the closing laps for second,
hometown boys Dick Houlihan and Vinnie Annarummo rounded out the top 5. You can read all about the race on
www.modifiedracingseries.com .
After a quick track sweeping the Late Models took to the track for the remainder of their 35 lapper that was also
rained out back in August. Kevin Casper and Matt Hudon led the pack to the green flag with Hudon jumping to the
front. Glen Lawton and Gerry DeGasparre would methodically work their way through the field but only Lawton
would be able to pressure on Hudon. Lawton dogged him for several laps but was unable to make a move by him as
Hudon claimed the win. Finishing a distant third would be DeGasparre, with Casper and Ray Parent rounding out
the top 5.
The Pro Stocks were up next for their 40 lapper and once again they put on a great show. Dave Silvia and Rob
Murray led the field to the green with Silvia getting the advantage. The lead was short lived as Murray got by Silvia
and built up a decent lead during this green flag stretch. During this stretch, Charlie Rose and Freddy Astle were
steamrolling their way through the field picking off cars one by one setting their eyes on Murray. A nasty crash on
lap 34 brought the field to a halt as the red flag waved. Kenny Spencer and Dave Hutchins tried their best to knock
down the turn four wall as both cars hit head on, virtually destroying Spencer’s mount. Both drivers were able to
climb from the wreckage unharmed but I’m sure they are sore today. This is the second car Spencer has destroyed,
as he continues to suffer through a miserable year. Once back to green Astle had assumed the lead with a hard
charging Rose on the outside. It would only be a matter of laps before Rose got by Astle bringing the Annarummo
clan (Todd and Vinny) with him. Once out in the front nobody touched Rose as he motored on for the win. Vinny
would settle for second with his son Todd third. Astle and Murray would round out the top 5.
The Sport Trucks concluded the night with a very clean race compared to what was witnessed the previous week.
The same results occurred however as Mike Cavallaro scored his seventh win of the year and virtually locking up
the championship with only one points race remaining. Andy Jeffrey led the early goings as Cavallaro worked his
way through the field. In the closing laps Jeffrey would loop his truck coming out of turn two handing the lead to
Cavallaro who went on unchallenged for the win. Billy Prisco would come home 2nd with John Paiva, Lenny Guy and
Adam Saleeba rounding out the top 5.
There will be no article next week as I will be out of town for a few days vacationing and taking in the PASS race at
Beech Ridge on Sunday. With the season winding down I would like to thank Nathan for asking me to write these
articles on a weekly basis. I hope you enjoy them and give you a little insight on what happens down in my neck of
the woods.
