“Bored” with Andy Seuss
by Nathan Kelly
I wanted to talk to Andy before he and the team went down to Florida and find out some things about their team. Many interviews aren’t technical at all, so I
wanted to ask Andy some chassis type questions because I think that many of our readers share my interests in that area. Then we got into his title
defense at New Smyrna Speedway and the teams 2007 plans.
RB: In this day and age of “monkey see, monkey do” chassis sales, what exactly is your car?
A.S.: It’s a 97 Troyer. Nothing super-special, we just take care of it. We don’t run the “soft” setup, its pretty basic. The setup is somewhat Troyer, and
somewhat our own design.
RB: As the “newer style” cars become more prevalent, do you foresee a need to get a new chassis?
A.S: A lot of people went out and bought new cars after Kirk Alexander debuted his new Spafco chassis. People sometimes think we have the money to
go out and get new cars and stuff, and that’s simply not true. Sure, I’d love to have a new race car, wouldn’t everyone?
RB: As I come from a pro-stock background, shocks have come to the forefront as the latest “hot” part that has to be state of the art. Has that happened in
the TVMRS modifieds as well?
A.S. We own a grand total of 6 shocks. They are Bilsteins done by Mal MacLean. He swears that they are the exact same as Mike Olsens Busch car, and
they work very well for us. Sometimes we’ll try a different RF shock or something, but we stay pretty basic.
Now that I got my technical questions out of the way (will I ever stop being a chassis guy and become a legitimate journalist, I say
not…haha) I asked Andy about his immediate plans for New Smyrna and also his plans on the local 2007 racing season.
RB: Whats the plan for New Smyrna? You already won the points title, so is it to go down and win races, chase points, or what?
A.S. Yes, Yes, and Yes! Our goal is to go down, set some fast times and win races for sure. Our motto is “lets not wreck” because we can’t afford to fix the
car every night and no one wants to stay up all night fixing the car. The nightly purse money is what’s keeping the car going from night to night, so I can’t
tear the car up. Sure it’d be nice to say that we are going at it with a “checkers or wreckers” mentality, but we simply can’t afford to do that.
RB: Is Smyrna fun? Or is it a grind?
A.S. New Smyrna is the greatest two weeks imaginable. It’s an awesome feeling to get up every morning knowing that you are gonna race that night. I am
so lucky to be able to do that.
Throughout my talk with Andy, he told me about his family and crew, and the many sacrifices that they make to help the team. The
reverence that he holds for the people that support him was so sincere, it was unbelievable. I’ve heard so many drivers thank their crews
and families at the races, and this was no pre-fab line.
“ My dad has the best work ethic of anyone I know”
“Have you met my Brother?...he’s awesome” (and I have and he is, but that’s another story)
“My family has to contend with a HUGE boat show that’s the same time of year, so people have to stay behind and take care of business”.
“Our crew is the best, bar none. Sometimes they’ll help out with tires for the car, or pitch in for food for that weeks race, whatever…they are awesome”
"I like to thank my wonderful sister Michelle for everything she does..."
I asked Andy what his post-Smyrna plans are and he said that they intend to run the full True Value Modified Series in 2007. He stated that the rules
package is perfect for Modified racing, with affordable steel-head motor options and the cost cutting tire rule. He is looking for a ride for some Whelen
Tour races, and is talking to a few teams, but really cant work too hard towards any deals until after they get back from Florida.
I just personally want to thank Andy for his time and patience with me (a complete rookie writer). It meant a lot. We at racersbored.com wish you the best of
luck in 2007!.
